Sustainability Forward, Zero Waste Impossible?

We don't know about you, but maybe since the pandemic, the care factor around sustainability, eco-friendly and zero waste has waned to a point where the urge to follow the latest trend has people buying mass-produced plastic crap with no questions asked, then throwing it out for the next trend. God, you've gotta love consumerism and capitalism working hand in hand.

Sustainable By Design, From Day One

Since starting this small business here in Perth, being as sustainable as possible has always been at the beginning of every decision we make — from our packaging to composting our food scraps.

What Our Compostable Packaging Actually Looks Like

All of our packaging, apart from our product labels, is compostable. That's kraft cardboard postage boxes, paper tape with water-activated plant-based glue, thermal postage labels, and Hex wrap brown paper packing paper. We reuse storage boxes and sterilise the jars customers bring back to us at markets, along with recycling anything possible.

Where We Fall Short (Honestly)

Although we try to do as much as possible, we're no saints when it comes to labelling. We tried to find a compostable one, but none would survive the fridge — plus the backing the labels come on isn't recyclable either, which is a real bummer.

We still do definitely want zero waste. We're just not sure it's even possible to be truly zero waste.

So, apart from the labels — which we're in the process of making easier to remove, so they no longer need to be burnt off before being recycled (we were genuinely shocked when we found that out) —

Chipping Away Towards Zero Waste

Respect to the companies that are already doing it well. Let us in on the plan, please! We'll keep chipping away, trying to find more sustainable ways to reduce our impact on the planet. Between using Aussie produce and products, composting our food waste, and using compostable and recyclable packaging, we think we're still on the right track.

If there's anything you think we could add, let us know your thoughts.
